Photo from UAAP Media."/><span class="fr-inner">University of the East’s John Abate in UAAP Season 88. <em>Photo from UAAP Media.</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — John Abate remains keen on living up to his responsibilities as team captain despite University of the East still struggling to notch its first win in UAAP Season 88.</p><p>After yet another heartbreak on Saturday — with the Red Warriors bowing down to Adamson University, 53-56 — the Recto-based cagers have lost their eighth straight game,  and 14th overall dating back to last year.</p><p>But for Abate, pointing fingers is the least that they could do if they want to end their woes.</p><p>“We all know that we shouldn’t be in the position that we’re in right now,” said Abate, who listed a team-high 16 points with eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals for UE. “But the morale is still high, and that still makes me optimistic.”</p><p>This was far from how Abate and the Red Warriors imagined this year was going to be, especially with the optimism that new coach Chris Gavina brings, the continuity that he, Precious Momowei, and Wello Lingolingo extend, and with the recruits that they have paraded for Season 88.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2025/9/16/uaap-will-ues-shift-in-culture-finally-translate-into-red-warriors-revival-1905"><strong>READ: Will UE’s shift in culture finally translate into Red Warriors’ revival?</strong></a></div><p>Still, even with their expectations not being met, Abate emphasized that he is not just going to throw everything away, padding his stats for personal gain.</p><p>“I don’t want to take anything for granted with the opportunities I’ve been presented with,” he said. “Every game, and during practice, I’m still doing what I can to make the best of each situation, and that comes with helping my teammates.”</p><p>Instead, what Abate seeks is for the Red Warriors to keep their heads high, saying that all hope is not lost for UE.</p><p>“It’s my job as the captain to make sure everyone’s heads are still up even with the losses,” he insisted. “We’re not gonna be perfect, but we need to make sure that we still give perfect effort every game.”</p><div><strong>RELATED VIDEOS:</strong> <script data-wid="auto" type="text/javascript" src="https://content.viralize.tv/display/?zid=AAFz8gWM8iRADsJr&amp;cid=ABo45JpoZ7H9VY2C"></script></div><div><script data-wid="auto" type="text/javascript" src="https://content.viralize.tv/display/?zid=AAFz8gWM8iRADsJr&amp;cid=ABo45jU5_UezwlrL"></script></div>
