Photo by Angela Davocol/NCAA Philippines. MANILA — College of Saint Benilde head coach Charles Tiu did not sugarcoat their NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball quarterfinal loss against Mapua University on Wednesday: “We played scared.”</div><div style="line-height:1.5"><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2025/11/26/ncaa-mapua-overcomes-benilde-forces-do-or-die-1644">READ: Mapua overcomes Benilde, forces do-or-die</a></div>The Blazers — holders of the twice-to-beat edge against their Season 100 Finals tormentors — absorbed a 73–58 defeat, allowing the defending champions to force a decider.And for Tiu, whose squad also succumbed to Mapua in the Season 99 Final 4, this was another classic case of his troops folding under pressure against the Cardinals when the lights are brighter.“As usual, ‘pag Mapua, parang takot yung mga boys,” he said. “They didn’t show out. Parang mga duwag yung players namin today. That wasn’t our game. It was exactly what we talked about not to do.”The likes of reigning MVP Allen Liwag were visibly irked by Mapua’s defense, and Tiu acknowledged that the Cardinals’ mind games worked against them anew.“They got into our heads, we got frustrated, and we couldn’t keep our composure,” he said.But aside from all the drama, other factors in their loss were their turnovers and how they allowed Mapua to have its way inside.“No excuses for us, we didn’t play well,” said Tiu, noting how they allowed the Cardinals to score 16 points off their 15 turnovers, while also getting bullied in the paint with a 32–16 disadvantage.He also credited the Cardinals and their ability to stay potent despite their struggles throughout the year.“Mapua, I felt the whole season, they were taking it easy,” he said. “Maybe they were underdogs, but only because we have the twice-to-beat.”And for Benilde to overcome this come Friday, Tiu kept his challenge straightforward: “We gotta wake up and find a way to be tougher next game.”“We have to play better to pass them. If we play like this, we will never win anything,” he added.
