Gilas Pilipinas Boys Under-16, alongside the National squads of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore, will display their talent in the province as the country hosts the 2025 SEABA Championships later this month. The regional meet is a qualifier for the FIBA Asia Cup U16, and only the champion of the tournament will advance to the main stage which will be hosted by Mongolia later this year. “We are ready to host a very good tournament for our country,” said Event Director Butch Antonio of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. “And like I always say, for the youth teams, you’re only 16 years old once in your life so kami sa SBP, we want this to be very memorable for them on and off the court. We always try to make it a little more special,” he added. As a testament to this, Antonio shared how every team — regardless of their placing at the end of the eliminations — will all have games until the very last day to maximize their stay in the Philippines. This is unlike the previous editions where only the champion down to the fourth placers can be determined, as there are only the championship game and the Battle for Third match. “What we did sa event natin, it’s a single round robin,” he said. “But what we did is hanggang 5th and 6th para may qualification, para they can still play.” The tournament will be held from May 24 to 30 at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, and it will be the head coaching debut of former Gilas men’s star LA Tenorio. “It’s gonna be his first endeavor as a head coach,” said Antonio of Tenorio, who will also be backed up by his former National teammate Gabe Norwood. “And for the SEABA kids to have him as their coach, it’s gonna be a nice experience for them.” Gilas will play Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, in order, and they will be the 7:00 p.m. main offering on each of the game days.
