MANILA, Philippines – NorthPort has not missed a beat since Calvin Abueva joined the team.

Abueva made headlines lately as he was traded by Magnolia — made official on May 27 — alongside Jerrick Balanza in exchange for ex-NorthPort ace William Navarro.

"The Beast" already showed what he can do for the Batang Pier, debuting with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in their game against Phoenix, while coupling it with a strong 19-point, eight-rebound outing in their 113-108 triumph over league-leading NLEX on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Assistant coach Rensy Bajar found no reason to be unhappy as Abueva gives the team the much-needed lifting it needs.

With the energetic Abueva displaying his worth, NorthPort has ended its eight-game losing streak.

"Calvin [Abueva] is a very positive player 'no? So it helps us a lot, especially alam naman natin si Calvin, kaya nga tinawag natin na 'The Beast' 'yan e," said Bajar during the postgame press conference.

Unfortunately for the Batang Pier, they were already out of contention. Had Abueva joined them earlier, he could have made a difference, asserted Bajar.

"'Yon nga lang is medyo late na addition sa amin si Calvin. But still, kahit gano'n is he's very professional, he practice well, at the same time he's encouraging the other players," he said.

For teammate Cade Flores, Abueva's influence is a "good addition" to the team.

"Calvin's just like me, an overly energetic player on the court. And having somebody that has the same energy when it comes to practices really lifts the spirits and lifts the energy in our team," said Flores.

"He's pushing everybody else to play hard. He plays hard, everybody else has to play hard to match it and I think it's a good addition to our team."
