The Chot Reyes-coached squad avoided elimination after they survived the third-seeded Magnolia Hotshots, 89-88, in their Philippine Cup Quarterfinals faceoff, Wednesday evening at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. RR Pogoy stepped up for the short-staffed Tropang 5G as he erupted for 30 points with a pair of rebounds and a steal, while Calvin Oftana, Kelly Williams, and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser provided help by scoring 21, 12, and 10, respectively. But while TNT’s bid to sweep this season’s conference championships remains alive, Reyes insisted that their focus is just winning one game at a time. ”It’s really not in our minds, but my attitude is these guys have done so much this year,” said the former Gilas Pilipinas coach. “Having said that, we had a long talk before practice to ask them how much they want it, because it’s gonna be really, really hard. So ang inisip namin is we are coming back to play on Saturday,” he added. TNT and Magnolia will face again on June 21, 5:00 p.m., at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila to determine who will advance into the semifinals, and Reyes’ troops will look to show the same firepower that they displayed in the endgame. Only an 80-79 game with still three minutes left in the contest, Ganuelas-Rosser drained a booming triple for a four-point lead, while Williams followed with another three-pointer at the 2:28 mark for an 86-81 lead. Oftana then extended their cushion to seven, 88-81, 27 seconds later, but Rome Dela Rosa and Paul Lee kept the Hotshots’ hope alive as they drained a trey and a four, respectively, to tie the game at 88. Williams then split his charities with six seconds remaining in the game, but while this gave Magnolia one last shot to steal the win, TNT’s defense prevented Zav Lucero from attempting a decent shot. Lee top-scored for Magnolia with 15 points — eight of which came from the four-point area — while Lucero and William Navarro each followed with 14. The Scores:  TNT 89– Pogoy 30, Oftana 21, Williams 12, Heading 10, Ganuelas-Rosser 5, Erram 4, Galinato 2, Heruela 0, Aurin 0, Enciso 0, Varilla 0, Khobuntin 0. Magnolia 88 – Lee 15, Navarro 14, Lucero 14, Lastimosa 12, Sangalang 10, Dela Rosa 10, Barroca 6, Dionisio 4, Laput 2, Reavis 1, Alfaro 0. Quarterscores: 18-22, 37-44, 61-65, 89-88.
