MANILA — As the NCAA starts a new century, the grand-old league is set to parade a number of new features for its 101st season.From a fresh format in the seniors’ and juniors’ basketball, to new events coming in the second semester, the NCAA promises to enter what could be the first of another hundred years with added focus on its student-athletes’ development, integrity, and character.<div><a href="http://ncaa season 101 abs cbn news">READ: Mapua, Lyceum to open Season 101 in new basketball tournament format.</a></div>“There are a lot of experts there, but I think I really told them that values should be first and foremost,” said Atty. Rico Quicho, the basketball commissioner this season. “Skills, that&#x27;s for the coaches to work on, and the student-athletes.”Still practicing law, Quicho will also oversee the hoops side of things in Season 101, wherein a new format will be replacing the traditional double round-robin, 18-game tournament that the men’s side has been competing in for the last 25 years.But aside from the format which will have the group stage, the play-in, and then the quarterfinals until the Finals, Quicho also takes pride in improving how things are run in the basketball side.“As commissioner, I would really just provide an environment where our student athletes would be able to really show their talents,” said Quicho. “And what I did there was to make sure that the officiating would be top-notch.”“Hindi ako natatakot na sinasabi ko top-notch? Bakit? I reached out to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. I told them that please give us the same access to the quality, competent referees that other leagues are enjoying,” he added. “We need that in the NCAA, we have the same talent.”“We have a very good talent pool not only in the juniors but also in the seniors, so we provide them with an environment where they can really flourish and showcase their talents and their skills,” added Quicho.Quicho, who also teaches in San Beda Alabang, also added that aside from the officiating, also to be implemented is the improved “FIBA-lizing” of the NCAA, or how adopting FIBA rules will be doubled down under his term.“I would really be pushing for that because tingin ko yun yung kulang,” he insisted. “If we focus, the results will come naturally, and the quality of the games will improve. But make no mistake about it, it&#x27;s really the integrity of the results. The integrity of the results? Akin yun.
