Photo from 19th FilOil Preseason Cup.MANILA — De La Salle University’s preseason debut was spoiled, but Jacob Cortez deemed their loss as important as the Green Archers prepare for their title-retention bid in UAAP Season 89 later this year.</div>“We needed this loss,” said Cortez, who had 13 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds in their 64-70 loss to the gritty National University on Sunday in the 19th FilOil Preseason Cup.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/5/17/national-u-stuns-defending-champ-la-salle-in-filoil-preseason-opener-2003">READ: National U stuns defending champ La Salle in FilOil preseason opener</a></div>The second-generation star almost sparked a 15-point comeback and willed La Salle to within five before the Bulldogs held on to stun the reigning champions.For Cortez, however, it was a setback that opened their eyes to the reality they are in right now, one without Season 88 Finals MVP Mike Phillips and his former backcourt partner Kean Baclaan.“We have a lot to learn from this, especially our new guys,” he said. “We needed it so our other guys would know how they should step up.”Cortez himself acknowledged the adjustments he needs to make, especially as a leader, should they want to retain the title in Taft Avenue.“It’s not there yet. I know I’m not vocal, but I know I will do whatever it takes to lead this team to another championship,” he said. “Tournaments like this are a good time to practice whatever we want to bring into the season.”The same approach is what he applied when asked about reports of offers to play overseas.For Cortez, bringing another championship to the Green Archers — as well as having the chance to play with his brother Mikey — remains his focus, which is why going professional is not among his priorities for now.“There are no opportunities yet that made me want to leave La Salle. I also want to hopefully play with Mikey, who is recovering from an injury. I also personally don’t want to leave La Salle,” added Cortez.
