Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala bowed out of the Guangzhou Open singles competition after a hard-fought 6–2, 4–6, 4–6 loss to American Claire Liu (WTA No. 305) in their center court showdown Tuesday.Eala, seeded fourth, started strong, taking the opening set 6–2 before the tides turned in the second set.The two players traded breaks early and were locked at 2-all before Eala surged ahead to 3–2 and 4–2. However, Liu turned it around, firing four aces in the second set alone.In the deciding set, Eala was fired up and led 4–3, but Liu came back with brilliant serves and a crucial counter drop-shot winner to lead 5–4.Serving for the match, the American opened the game with another ace and quickly raced to 40–0, holding three match points.Eala saved two, but Liu ultimately sealed the comeback victory to advance to the next round.The 20-year-old Filipina will continue her campaign in the doubles event, teaming up with Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok, currently ranked No. 62 in doubles.The pair will face the fourth-seeded tandem of Emily Appleton (WTA doubles No. 80) and Qianhui Tang (WTA doubles No. 78) in their opening match.
