Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- The House of Representatives has approved a bill seeking to allow Filipino sports heroes to be laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.During plenary session on Monday, 196 congressmen unanimously voted to approve House Bill 11229 or the proposed Commemoration of Filipino Sports Heroes Act on third and final reading.The measure defines Filipino “sports heroes” as national athletes, including those with disabilities, who have distinguished themselves in their particular field of sports, possessed good moral character and integrity, won any medal in the Olympics, Paralympic Games, or a World Championship in any professional competition sanctioned by any of the international governing bodies of various sports, and recognized as such by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Games and Amusement Board. It also refers to any Filipino athlete, coach, or trainer, who were inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.The bill provides that sports heroes must be Filipino citizens by birth, including those who are naturalized in another country, but reacquired Philippine citizenship, making them dual citizens. A screening committee shall be established by the PSC to determine and recommend qualified athletes.
