Photo from Rom Anzures, ABS-CBN News.MANILA — The Pilipinas Climbing Inc., the newly-formed national governing body for sports climbing, is eyeing both immediate and long-term growth for the sport in the country.</div>The PCI is eyeing success in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, and is also looking to qualify for the 2026 Asian Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.They are hoping to both prioritize support for its grassroots program as well as its current roster of athletes.“We have now a clearer direction. Not that we were not before, but we’re now more focused,” said PCI President Attorney Al Agra during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum in Manila.“The dream is now clearer, and the success indicator is high for our athletes and for the association,” he added.The PCI is in the process of completing its application to be a member of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), but this is just among the goals that it is looking to come into fruition as soon as possible.“Wala pa tayong standard speedwalls here,” said Agra, sharing that the country only has seven-meter speedwalls and not the standard 15-m structures. “Hopefully, we will have the first-ever in the Philippines, to prepare our athletes. Seven meters lang, so hindi nate-test yung ating mga atleta.”Aside from this, the PCI is also hoping for collegiate leagues like the UAAP and the NCAA to integrate the sport into their programs as it looks to entice more prospects and young players.<div>The PCI, in preparation for their campaign in the SEA Games in December, will also be competing at the ASEAN Championships in Kuala Lumpur this July, and attending a bouldering boot camp in Singapore in August for better exposure.
