Photo courtesy of Philippine Sportswriters Association.MANILA — With Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio steering reforms and veteran coach Yeng Guiao securing additional funding, Philippine sports is poised for brighter days.</div>The two were honored during the San Miguel Corp.-Philippine Sportswriters Association Annual Awards on Monday night at the Diamond Hotel Manila.Gregorio was named PSA Executive of the Year, while Guiao received the PSA President’s Award, and the former underscored the PSC’s role as a support system for athletes.<div style="line-height:1.5"><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/2/17/after-2nd-athlete-of-the-year-nod-carlos-yulo-hopes-more-pinoys-excel-on-world-stage-1258">READ: After 2nd Athlete of the Year nod, Carlos Yulo hopes more Pinoys excel on world stage</a></div>“The PSC and its staff are enablers, not gatekeepers, not disciplinarians. The PSC’s success is not about single authorship. We let all sectors participate in what we want to do, and that is our secret,” he said.Gregorio also noted that when he assumed office in July 2025, he already had a clear roadmap.“I have been committed and focused on three things since that day: athletes’ welfare, strategic infrastructure development, and sports tourism,” he stressed.A former athlete and sports executive, Gregorio said his goal is to build “an enabling environment that creates opportunities for athletes.”“Let the athletes be in the limelight. They are our compass. When our athletes succeed, we know we have succeeded,” he said, before adding that athletes’ success uplifts the entire nation.“Sinabi ko na po ito minsan na dapat maging maligaya ang ating mga atleta, maligaya din ang 115 million Filipinos. Pinatunayan na ito ni Caloy [Yulo],” he said, referring to the country’s Olympic gold medalists in Tokyo and Paris.The PSC now has significantly more resources to work with following the Supreme Court ruling that restored its full five percent share from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and other mandated remittances — the result of Guiao’s decade-long legal battle.And for Gregorio, this was about long-term impact.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/2/17/guiao-on-winning-sc-ruling-make-life-better-for-those-people-coming-after-you-1620">Guiao on winning SC ruling: ‘Make life better for those people coming after you’</a></div>“We are leaders and we won’t be here forever, but we will leave a legacy that all of you will be proud of,” he said, before Guiao echoed the sentiment.“We hope that our sports leaders and athletes will do the same. Make life a little better for those coming after you. Make the athletes have a better chance of being successful and give our countrymen a lot more to cheer about,” he said.
