That motivation quickly bore fruit, with Laput anchoring the Lady Spikers’ perfect two-game start and Saavedra leading the Tamaraws to a hat-trick of wins to open the season. The pair’s stellar showing earned them the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) Players of the Week honors presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for the period covering February 14 to 22. The 6-foot-2 Fil-Australian opposite hitter came out blazing, dropping 23 points and five digs to power La Salle’s 25-19, 25-14, 27-25 Valentine’s Day sweep of FEU. She then sustained her scorching form a week later, delivering 22 points and three digs in the Lady Spikers’ commanding 25-14, 25-15, 26-24 win over University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Sunday. With tougher challenges looming, Laput remains intent on showcasing La Salle’s championship tradition as the Lady Spikers chase a 13th women’s volleyball title. “Of course, we want to win all our games in three sets and we knew that we had the capability to finish that set but we extended it,” said Laput. “We just had to really show the Lasallian puso right there and there.” Laput edged teammate Angel Canino, University of the Philippines standout Niña Ytang, and the National University (NU) trio of Sam Cantada, Vange Alinsug, and Arah Panique for the weekly citation. UAAP Media.The Ilonggo spiker delivered 16 points in the Tamaraws’ 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of La Salle on opening day before adding 11 points and seven digs in a 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 win over University of the East four days later. His biggest outing came in FEU’s 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 comeback win over six-peat-seeking NU last Saturday, February 21, where he tallied 15 points to anchor his team to a statement victory. Determined to avoid the nerves that plagued them in their Season 87 finals loss to the Bulldogs, the Tamaraws relied on composure to turn the tide. “Lagi naman naming pinag-uusapan sa team na kahit anong situation sa court, kailangan pilitin namin na du’n kami sa pinaka-kalma kami,” said Saavedra. “Big factor kasi talaga ‘yung kalmado lang kami, lalo na kapag crucial. Hindi naman pwede na sa crucial, mara-rattle pa kami.” Saavedra bested Lirick Mendoza, NU’s Leo Ordiales, UST’s Josh Ybañez and University of the East’s Raquim Aceron for the weekly citation, which is also backed by Discovery Suites and Buffalo Wings N’ Things.</div>
