Two chemistry students of the Ateneo de Manila University are representing the Philippines in a global competition that aims to find innovative solutions for energy-efficient smart cities.

They were chosen by Schneider Electric as the grand champions of the Go Green In The City Philippine Finals 2019.

Their winning idea is a renewable energy device they've dubbed as "rainshine" panels.

Unlike ordinary solar panels that generate electricity purely from sunlight, a rainshine panel made from graphene can also harness power from rain falling on its surface.

Yumi Briones and Gabby Ozaeta said that while the rainshine panel is still in its concept stage, they are both looking to develop it.
