JM De Guzman opens up about fame and dark past

<p>Actors never aim for retakes. But, in real life, there are instances where they need take-twos, like JM De Guzman, who got his second shot at his career. Listen as JM relives his story in the Tatak Star Magic Celebrity Conversations episode hosted by Star Magic head, Lauren Dyogi. </p><p>As JM recalled, he auditioned with his friends for the annual Cinemalaya until he landed his biggest role in the festival via “Last Supper No. 3.” His performance in the said movie caught the attention of Star Magic inviting him to audition for the afternoon series “Midnight Phantom” where he got the role as Rafael Rosell’s best friend.</p><p>But even before that, JM has already loved performing despite a few setbacks. His supposed launching for Star Circle Batch 9 was halted after failing to pass his workshops.  He felt he was too young and wasn’t able to keep up with their workshops that also tackled personality development including how artists must engage in interviews.  </p><p>He opted to just finish high school, then, enroll at the University of the Philippines-Diliman for college. He took a talent test and that’s how he got into a theater program at UP Diliman. </p><p>Theater is therefore imprinted in JM’s DNA as an actor. Acting has been his escape since, “Nagiging ibang tao ako. Nakaka-discover ako ng ib<wbr/>ang disposition. Nakaka-<wbr/>discover ako ng ibang perspect<wbr/>ive. Nagugustuhan ko ‘yung nak<wbr/>akaaral ng ibang tao.” However, repeated escape from real emotions can lead to suffocation. In an attempt to ‘escape’ again, he turned to vices. This came after his breakthrough role in “<a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/articles-photos/73082517-angelito-ang-batang-ama-2011-2012-15312" target="_blank"><u><b>Angelito: Batang Ama</b></u></a>.”</p><p>“Kinain po ako ng fame. Hindi <wbr/>ko na-handle ‘yung fame,” he confessed, adding that love also played a part in his dark past. It felt as though his heart burst with passion both for his career and his girlfriend. In hindsight, he thinks there was too much love that his heart wasn’t able to hold it all in. When he was younger, he liked the feeling of pain. Now, he just wants healing and happiness. </p><p>“Alam ko namang mahal na mahal<wbr/> ko &#x27;yung career ko kaya depressing din sa akin &#x27;pag bumabagsak ak<wbr/>o. Kasi alam kong gagawin ko lahat par<wbr/>a sa career ko.,” said JM, admitting that he’s scared when something big comes his way, especially when it’s as big as fame. “Parang nalulula,” described the actor, who considers Peterson Alvarez in <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/initsamagdamag" target="_blank"><em><b><u>Init Sa Magdamag</u></b></em></a> the character closest to his heart. </p><p>But he’s surely learned, with Star Magic guiding his steps.
