Roselle Nava shares how she prepared son Rafa for his The Voice Kids Blind Audition

He may be the eldest son of multi-platinum recording artist and Philippines’ “Sentimental Diva” Roselle Nava, but 10-year-old Rafa Tan was able to shine at his own right, as he impressed us with his version of his mom’s hit track “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” during the Blind Auditions of <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/thevoicekids2023">The Voice Kids Season 5</a>.During their interview with hosts Robi Domingo and Bianca Gonzalez, the mother-and-son tandem divulged that Rafa started singing around the age of 2 or 3 through nursery rhymes and performing at school. The first “real song” he learned was our country’s national anthem “Lupang Hinirang,” when his teacher assigned him to sing it, assuming that he also got the vocal talent like his mom. And since then, he’s been the one tasked to sing it during their school programs. Thus, he joined <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/thevoicekids2023">The Voice Kids</a> to follow the footsteps of her mom and to be a better singer. And if there’s one significant piece of advice from her that he always keeps in mind, it would be to make his audiences feel his emotions and his heart in every song that he sings.For his Blind Audition, he picked one of his mom’s classic hits “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita,” which truly impressed Coach Martin Nievera despite the errors that he committed. He then had the chance to perform it together with her mom when she was called onstage, much to the surprise of everyone, especially KZ who remarked that she used to only see Roselle on the cover of her notebooks during her student days.In his The Voice Kids DigiTV interview, he animatedly recounted to hosts Jeremy G and Elha the rollercoaster of emotions that he felt from the time he was backstage to the moment he stepped on the stage and performed. Thus, she and her husband want to expose him in this kind of stint “to inspire him to train more and to improve”.Elha wasn’t able to help herself from fangirling over Roselle, whose hits are among her go-to karaoke songs. In return, the seasoned singer commended her for her vocal prowess and disclosed that they watched her rendition of “Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos” during her The Voice Kids Season 2 days as her way of showing Rafa what does it mean to sing from the heart.When asked how she helped her son prepare for the competition, she related that they actually agreed to postpone his participation to next year since he’s only 10 years old and she’s not that confident yet since they have not trained and assumed that he would get overwhelmed. But that instantly changed when his dad, Parañaque City councilor Allen Ford Tan, suggested to him to not pass up the opportunity of him to be trained further.Since he’s most familiar with her songs, they decided to focus on rehearsing those, particularly “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita.” Part of their practices was her interpreting and explaining to him what the song is all about since he’s still too young to understand it, unlike her who was already 18 when she first sang that song.“Medyo nahirapan kami, pero sabi ko, dapat kapag kumanta siya ng song, may story, maintindihan ng mga nakikinig ‘yong story. ‘Yon naman talaga ang pinaka importante, not so much on the technical stuff.
