Supreme Court faces credibility issue with De Castro appointment: NUPL

MANILA - The Supreme Court carries with it questions on its credibility after Teresita Leonardo-De Castro was appointed the chief justice, the chairman of the National Union of People&#x27;s Lawyers said Monday.De Castro, the most senior magistrate, was chosen to replace Maria Lourdes Sereno whose appointment was invalidated in May. De Castro is expected to serve only until October 8 when she reaches the mandatory age of retirement of 70.&quot;We believe that the problem with the Supreme Court now is the credibility and the need to dispel that concept of partiality,&quot; NUPL Chairman and former lawmaker Neri Colmenares told ANC&#x27;s Early Edition.&quot;The fact that Justice De Castro was chosen, it seems that it’s already pre-concluded by many that whatever case we file against Duterte in the Supreme Court, it will go nowhere,&quot; he said.Colmenares noted that De Castro voted against their group&#x27;s motions: a protest against imposition of martial law in Mindanao and the burial of ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.De Castro and 7 other magistrates voted to oust Sereno for her failure to fully disclose her wealth by granting the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/focus/05/11/18/look-who-voted-for-against-sereno-ouster">LOOK: Who voted for, against Sereno ouster</a></li></ul>She and 6 of her peers now face an impeachment complaint before the House of Representatives for culpable violation of the constitution and betrayal of public trust.
