The plunder case against former Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla does not disqualify him from pursuing a comeback to the Senate, the Commission on Elections said Wednesday.

Electoral aspirants can only be barred from joining the polls if there is a final conviction against them, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said.

"Kung walang final conviction ang kandidato, puwede iyang tumakbo kahit nasa piitan siya," he told radio DZMM.

(If there is no final conviction yet against a candidate, he may run even from behind bars.)

Revilla is accused of misusing P224 million from his "pork barrel" or discretionary funds. He is detained at Camp Crame police general headquarters.

His plunder trial ended in August and his case is up for decision.

Revilla's certificate of candidacy was filed by his wife, Bacoor Mayor Lani Mercado.
