The Department of Education said it needed some P3 billion to replace thousands of classrooms damaged by a series of strong quakes in Mindanao last month. The 3 October quakes destroyed 1,000 classrooms and caused &quot;major damage&quot; to 1,300 other rooms, mostly in Davao and Soccskargen regions, and parts of Northern Mindanao, said DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan. The P3-billion fund needed to replace these rooms in roughly a year excludes the cost of learning shelters that will be temporarily used by students, he said. &quot;Titingnan natin kung may naiiwan pa tayong contingency funds for this year at mao-obligate pa... We are also in touch with Congress already because we are at level where the budget is under deliberation,&quot; he told radio DZMM. (We will look at whether or not we still have contingency funds for this year or obligated funds.)
