Workers in Tokyo cleaned a stone pillar at the entrance to a controversial shrine on Saturday (June 1) after someone spray-painted the word "toilet" on it.

Local media alleged that a man filmed himself spraying the graffiti at Yasukuni Shrine before uploading the video to a Chinese social media platform.

The shrine is controversial as it honors Japan's war dead, including 14 World War Two leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as "Class A" war criminals.

Offerings and visits to the shrine by Japanese politicians regularly attract criticism from China and South Korea, parts of which were occupied by Japan in the years preceding and during WW2. - Report from Reuters
