Heavy rain from Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) flooded the Philippine capital Manila and nearby cities on July 24, forcing authorities to declare a state of calamity in a region that is home to 13 million people.

The typhoon then swept through northern Taiwan on Thursday, killing three people, triggering flooding and sinking a freighter before barreling west across the Taiwan Strait towards China.

Taiwan said five freight ships were stranded off the island and one sank due to Typhoon Gaemi.

After barreling west across the Taiwan Strait, Gaemi roared into southeastern China on Thursday. Local officials have stepped up warnings in the coastal provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang. In Fujian, government officials have relocated about 150,000 people.
