Theater star bests Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos at 37th Gawad Urian

<img src="" alt="061814-angeli1_main.jpg" width="400" height="300" align="left" border="0"/><div>Highly-acclaimed director Lav Diaz’s epic Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan earned the most nods from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino as it dominated the 37th Gawad Urian award’s night held at the Dolphy Theater on Tuesday evening.</div><div>Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan (North, The End of History) received the night&#x27;s most prestigious award -- Best Picture – as well as Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Actress.</div><div>Theater star Angeli Bayani earned her first Urian Best Actress award by besting heavy contenders and award-winning stars such as Superstar Nora Aunor, Star for all Seasons Vilma Santos, Cherie Gil, Vivian Velez, Agot Isidro, Lorna Tolentino, Eugene Domingo and Rustica Carpio as well as young newbie Teri Malvar.</div><div><br/></div><div>Noted for her “silent acting” on the film, an overwhelmed Bayani went up onstage and shared her award to her other Best Actress nominees during her acceptance speech.</div><div>“It was an honor to be nominated alongside such honorable actresses, such brilliant actresses. I feel like this is not happening right now,” she joked.</div><div> </div><div>“At feeling ko kailangan ko magtago kasi baka... mga Noranians and Vilmanians, okay po tayo, ha? Fan din po ako, maniwala kayo,” Bayani added.</div><div><br/></div><div>Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan, which was screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of three characters—a man framed for murder, a wife who had to battle despair and seek a living after her husband was jailed, and the real perpetrator who has lost hope in the country and humanity.</div><div><br/></div><div>The film’s other stars Sid Lucero and Archie Alemania were also nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor category, respectively, although it was only Bayani who took home the plum among the cast.</div><div>Veteran actor Joel Torre playing the role of prisoner and hit man Tatang on the action-thriller On The Job won his third Urian Best Actor award.</div><div>&#x27;I would like to dedicate this award to a very special person. She&#x27;s the most important person in my life. For 30 years, she stood up with my mistress, which was my career, but until now, she&#x27;s still here,&#x27; he said.</div><div>&#x27;To my wife, para sa iyo ‘to. I know you love diamonds but this is more meaningful and more precious,&#x27; he continued.</div><div>Kapamilya star Angel Aquino brought home her first-ever Urian under the Best Supporting Actress category for gender-centered film Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita. Coincidentally, Aquino was nominated twice for the same category, her other nomination came from the film Porno. </div><div>Transit director Hannah Espia meanwhile made a mark in history by being the third female director to win in the Best Director category ever since the award-giving body’s inception in 1977.
