Five elements that make ‘The Debutantes’ a successful horror film

While most local horror films today center on myths and folklore, The Debutantes offers something fresh yet equally devious.

Director Prime Cruz’s second venture into horror filmmaking has cemented the notion that even horror films can get good coloring and cinematography. The Debutantes starring Sue Ramirez, Miles Ocampo, Michelle Vito, Jane de Leon, and Chanel Morales, centered on the evil supernatural forces that are out to kill the ladies who are becoming debutantes after getting involved in the bullying of Sue’s character named Lara.

Along with the fact that the movie has five characters, we’re also giving you five reasons why The Debutantes is worth seeing.

1. Coloring and Angling

The film was not touted a “color horror” for nothing, as Direk Prime made good use of the lighting and the angles in making sure that the horrific scenes are made scarier with the types of based on the lights that bathe the scene. Direk Prime’s camerawork is also worth noting as he digressed from the usual wide and tight shots in evoking an incoming threat towards a character.

2. Prosthetics and MakeUp

Anyone who has seen Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B would know just how detailed and realistic Direk Prime’s “monsters” have to be. This time, the black evil element who’s been killing the debutantes is somewhat at par with the exemplary prosthetics and costume of the aliens in the Hollywood films.

3. The plot

As soon as the teaser of the film came out, many weren’t able to stop comparing it to the ‘70s Hollywood horror film Carrie. But, as it turns out and just like what the five actresses emphasized in the past, The Debutantes plot is really different. Not to mention, that the killer twist was really unexpected.

4. Acting

One thing about horror films is that its success lie on three things: the plot, the effects, and the acting. This time, all five ladies can be seen really putting their heart into their respective scenes. But special props would have to given to Miles and most especially Sue, who really stripped herself of the good girl aura in the film.

5. Spook fest

The primary goal of horror films is really to scare or surprise the audience and The Debutantes did just that as it took the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions, especially during the deaths scenes and the shocking finale.

Catch The Debutantes in cinemas nationwide starting October 4.
