LOOK: Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s fiery “Mayon Volcano” evening gown makes waves online

One huge factor in Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s crowning moment, held this Monday in Bangkok, Thailand, was her fiery evening gown created by none other than Filipino designer, Mak Tumang.

The beauty queen slayed on stage wearing a scarlet floor-length gown that took inspiration from Mayon Volcano, an active volcano and famous landmark in her very own birthplace, Albay, Bicol.

Mak is the same designer who created Catriona’s ensemble for the Preliminary Competition of the annual pageant held last Thursday – an intricate masterpiece inspired by the eponymous magical bird Ibong Adarna from Philippine folklore – which she described as “a fitting symbol of resilience, rising, and rebirth”.

Story goes, the Ibong Adarna's enchanting voice can enable complete healing to anyone who hears it. Some artists liken it to the mythological Phoenix where it recurrently regenerates itself by arising amidst a spectacle of flames and candescence. The Filipino-Australian beauty officially just succeeded Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa as the new reigning queen, making her the fourth Filipina to ever hold the title.
