In an interview with DZMM last May 18, newly appointed Department of Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the country won’t be hosting the Miss Universe pageant this year.

She explained that there are budget constraints and that the department needs to address other concerns.

"We'll focus muna on other things. Anyway, kaka-Miss Universe lang naman so baka saka na lang," she said.

"Marami muna tayo kailangan ayusin," she further stated.
