Ryan Cayabyab reveals how he gave up smoking

<p>Known as a pillar in the local music industry with five decades of his invaluable contribution to original Pilpino music or OPM, Ryan Cayabyab is known as an important figure when it comes to anything musical. Given the title of National Artist for Music in 2018, Ryan has shared his talent for composing, arranging, and performing since the early ‘70s with a wide range of musical styles.</p><p>On his Instagram account last August 26, the 66-year-old artist shared a lesser known fact about himself and his journey towards quitting smoking almost four decades ago. Accompanying it was a photo of a twenty-something year old Ryan with his barkada at a beach in Montemar, Bagac, Bataan.</p><p>He wrote, “By 1984, I had stopped smoking for more than 2 years na and prior to biting on a pipe (this photo) I ate a lot of candies to satisfy my oral fixation caused by having to put a cigarette between my lips. After 14 cavities in just 3 months i switched to chewing gum. Success! But I developed a lot of gas. Ugh. So I got to biting a very tough pipe. Nasira din yung pipa after a year but it helped. I am now clear of that ciggy addiction for 38 years! More than the years I actually smoked 2 packs a day of PM100s! Ryan graduated from the UP College of Music where he eventually became a professor for almost two decades. </p><p>At the Kapamilya network, Ryan joined Pinoy Dream Academy season 2 as the official headmaster in 2008. Two decades before that, he composed and rearranged the classical tinged version of ABS-CBN’s jingle and Station ID from 1987-1995 as well as the "ABS-CBN Millennium Overture", which was used in the ABS-CBN New Millennium Station ID in 2000. Some of his most iconic compositions include OPM classics, <em>“Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka”, “Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika”, “Da Coconut Nut”, “Kailan, Paraiso”, </em>and<em> “Nais Ko.”</em></p>
