Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that two characters from season one will return in the second season.

“Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will definitely return. I believe in his return, and I also believe that the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will return," he said in an interview with Deadline’s Contenders Television.

Seong Gi-hun is the main character of the series who lives with his mother and struggles to provide financial support for his daughter. He wants to seek custody for his daughter so he joins a survival game to win billions of won.

Meanwhile, the Front Man is the character who is overseeing the said survival game.

Dong-hyun said he hopes that Squid Game has paved the way for Western audiences to further appreciate non-English projects.

"I hope that projects such as Squid Game’have opened the doors at least a little [when it comes to the language barrier]. I wish it becomes an opportunity for the American audience to view [projects] without dubbing while reading subtitles. We are hoping that this opportunity opens up," he said.

Meanwhile, back in March, Dong-hyuk also shared that he is thinking of bringing back Jung Ho-yeon, who plays the role of North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, in the second season.

"Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see," he said in a red carpet interview with Deadline at the Producers Guild of America Awards.

But he relayed that he has yet to start writing the next season of the hit Korean series.

"I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet," he said.

"There will be more great games, that’s all I can say," the director added.

Squid Game made history on Netflix as it set a new record for any series on the global streaming platform in its initial debut.

Netflix announced last October 2021 that the series has reached 111 million fans since it was released on September 17. That happened in a span of 25 days only.
