In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the comedian shared that Steven first got to know him through his Netflix show Comin' In Hot.

"He just loved the stories about my mom and our relationship… He just enjoyed that dynamic, and he enjoyed the storytelling, and he was like, 'I want to make this story a reality.' And it's not about making fun of Filipinos. It's about a family first that just happens to be Filipino," he remarked.

When asked why the film is called Easter Sunday, Jo Koy shared, "Well, Easter is just that day when Filipinos all come out. I mean, it's more packed than Christmas. That was the significance of that day. I felt like it's like an indirect way of saying this is for Filipinos. I don't think that many people celebrate Easter as hard as we do."

"I was already in the stand-up comedy circuit for 27 years then, but Netflix kept saying no to me. So, I had to pay for my very first special, ‘Live from Seattle.’ It came out of my pocket, from all of my savings … When you watch it, you’ll see me laughing onstage, but in my head, I was saying, ‘I’m broke! I don’t have any more money!’ So, I didn’t know what I was going to do!" he shared.

God bless, Netflix — don’t get me wrong. But if it wasn’t for that moment that I shot ‘Live From Seattle,’ this right now would never have happened. So, I feel like I need to pay it forward and help open the door for others like me," he stated.
