Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy shared how Steven Spielberg became a producer for his upcoming movie Easter Sunday.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the comedian shared that Steven first got to know him through his Netflix show Comin' In Hot.

"He just loved the stories about my mom and our relationship… He just enjoyed that dynamic, and he enjoyed the storytelling, and he was like, 'I want to make this story a reality.' And it's not about making fun of Filipinos. It's about a family first that just happens to be Filipino," he remarked.

Jo Koy added, "And you're going to relate to it. No matter what ethnicity you are, a mom is a mom. They all do the same mom stuff."

When asked why the film is called Easter Sunday, Jo Koy shared, "Well, Easter is just that day when Filipinos all come out. I mean, it's more packed than Christmas. That was the significance of that day. I felt like it's like an indirect way of saying this is for Filipinos. I don't think that many people celebrate Easter as hard as we do."

On Thursday, May 5 (PH time), Jo Koy took to social media to express his gratitude to Steven for producing the film.

"I can’t wait for the world to see my movie Easter Sunday. Thank you Steven Spielberg and Amblin for making this all possible," Jo Koy said.

Easter Sunday is produced by Amblin, Steven's film and television production company.

Prior to Easter Sunday, Jo Koy has made three Netflix original comedy specials to date. He starred in Jo Koy: Live From Seattle in 2017, Jo Koy: Comin' In Hot in 2019, and Jo Koy: In His Elements in 2020.

In an interview with Inquirer back in in 2020 while promoting his In His Elements show, Jo Koy shared how his Netflix specials came to life.

The comedian relayed that he actually self-funded the Live from Seattle special before Netflix bought it.

"I was already in the stand-up comedy circuit for 27 years then, but Netflix kept saying no to me. So, I had to pay for my very first special, ‘Live from Seattle.’ It came out of my pocket, from all of my savings … When you watch it, you’ll see me laughing onstage, but in my head, I was saying, ‘I’m broke! I don’t have any more money!’ So, I didn’t know what I was going to do!" he shared.

Jo Koy remarked that he wants to pay it forward and extend a hand to others who also want to make it in the industry.

"So, them [Netflix] finally buying the show from me after they already said no, then giving me two more specials, I felt like I certainly knew how hard it would be to get a foot in the door. God bless, Netflix — don’t get me wrong. But if it wasn’t for that moment that I shot ‘Live From Seattle,’ this right now would never have happened. So, I feel like I need to pay it forward and help open the door for others like me," he stated.
