Team behind ‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ seeks financial support for Oscars campaign

<p>The team of<em> Iti Mapukpukaw</em>, the Philippines&#x27; official entry to the 96th Academy Awards, has started to raise funding for their Oscar campaign.</p><p>&quot;Malaki &#x27;yung gagastushin sa the whole campaign. We aim to get around Php5.5 million... Actually, FDCP (Film Development Council of the Philippines) expressed their support by giving Php1 million. And then we asked them if they could give more. Sana mabigyan,&quot; film director and writer Carl Joseph Papa said.</p><p>He added: &quot;And we are also trying to reach out to others, like NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) and other politicians. So hopefully we can get that amount.&quot;</p><p>In the same interview, the director explained what the movie&#x27;s inclusion in Variety&#x27;s Oscars predictions could mean for <em>Iti Mapukpukaw.</em></p><div><iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mlBCvkBzGUY" title="&#x27;Iti Mapukpukaw&#x27; begins journey to the Oscars | ANC" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>&quot;I think when Variety included us in in their list, it&#x27;s more of we are in contention to getting in the shortlist for now because this December there will be a preliminary vote,&quot; he relayed.</p><p>The director further shared: &quot;Then after that, I think late December there will be a shortlist of 15 films that are going to be competing for five slots. Be it my mother (<em>Manang Biring</em>) or my grandmother (<em>Paglisan</em>), I try to make sense of how they would have felt to understand the choices they made<em>. Iti Mapukpukaw</em> is different.&quot; </p><p>&quot;I am not putting myself in someone else’s shoes; instead, I am wearing my own. Eric’s story is one that’s personal. It is made of dark and repressed memories. I hope that in creating Eric, I create a refuge for people who suffered the same fate as he did,&quot; he added.  </p><p>&quot;And for those who have not, I hope the film sheds more light on this topic. I hope that it creates a safe space where giving information, fostering understanding, and initiating discourse are things we don’t have to be afraid of,&quot; he continued.</p>
