After playing the dual role of main villain Rex Vanguardia and General Borgo from the planet Marte in the recently concluded ABS-CBN fantasy series Darna, Richard Quan shared why he considered the supervillain role as the hardest he had taken on to date.

“Challenging siya kasi dual character siya. Wala akong problem with the rest pero si Borgo kasi naka-prosthetics siya. Parang ang record ko ata na naka-prosthetics is 16 and a half hours. Sabi ko nga kay direk sa Jollibee nga at si Ronald McDonald’s two hours lang ata tinatanggal so ako naka-16 and a half," he said.

Especially pag-Borgo ka,” he added.

The veteran character actor said he is thankful despite the added challenge of having to act under prosthetics for almost an entire day for some scenes.

“Yung disiplina, dinala ako sa next level. Kasi okay lang na naka-prothetics ka, hindi ka makakain kasi you have something sa bibig mo. Nag-prepare din ako pumayat kasi I was expecting a lot of action scenes sa Darna. Nakikisama ka pa siyempre sa set," he said.

"So, you have to put your mind sa relaxed na state, sa point na makaka-function ka pa ng maayos. But I’m fortunate enough that I’m working with very generous directors. I’m just reacting actually sa mga co-actors ko, especially Janella (Salvador) and Jane (de Leon),” he added.

Richard admitted that he hopes the audience can get one takeaway from his role, pointing out the motivation behind Borgo’s actions which he said were not pure evil.

“I’m very thankful sa industry na pinagkakatiwalaan ako sa wide range of characters talaga. I’m very, very grateful for that. When playing a villain, sa point of view lang naman ng audience na villain yun. As an actor, wala pa akong ginanapan na villain.

Lahat tayo, 99.999% kaya natin ginagawa yun at that moment kasi 'yun ang pinakatamang gawin. So that’s the way I see it. I hope nag-work yun after 30 years,” he added.

Richard Quan started out in showbiz as a model before getting into acting onscreen and on stage in the early 90s.

In 2019, he won the Best Actor award from the European Philippines International Film Festival (EPIFF) held at Cinema Alfiere, Florence, Italy for his portrayal of the character of Yoshiaka Moto in the film Kapayapaan sa Gitna ng Digmaan which was released in 2018.
