Tirso Cruz III leaves FDCP for personal reasons

Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Chairperson Tirso Cruz III resigned from his post earlier this week and cited personal reasons for his move. Jose Javier Reyes, FDCP's technical consultant, was the one who dropped the news in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

Tirso served as the Chairperson following the six-year chairmanship of actress Liza Diño who served under the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte. The change in chairmanship then was controversial as Liza’s appointment was supposed to be until 2025.

The technical consultant added that rumors about him taking over FDCP are groundless as the Malacañan Palace has not approved of anyone as of this writing. Meanwhile, Education Head Rica Arevalo will be serving as the officer-in-charge while FDCP awaits an official announcement coming from the Palace.

“There is no credibility because the Palace has not appointed Pip's successor. Only the OIC has been approved by the board," he said.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post by the FDCP posted earlier this week, it was revealed that Tirso made his announcement to his staff during their general assembly last March 11.

“Since March 6, I am no longer the Chairman of FDCP. I am just Tirso Cruz III, the actor,” Tirso said.

The FDCP shared that while they are saddened over the decision of their former Chairperson, they will be continuing to support him as he pursues his other passions. They will be continuing the projects that have been implemented as well.

“Chair Tirso’s invaluable service to the Philippine Film Industry is remarkable. The FDCP will continue to implement its activities and existing programs in support of the Philippine Film Industry,” they added.

Tirso’s tenure as the FDCP Chairperson ran for a total of one year and seven months. During his chairmanship, the Philippine industry has slowly made its way back to the cinemas after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

The show must go on for the FDCP as they have several projects coming this 2024 such as the highly-anticipated 20th year of Cinemalaya this August, the 12th QCinema International Film Festival in November, and the much awaited 50th Metro Manila Film Festival in December, among others.
