Did you know BINI's hit song 'Pantropiko' was composed by a film student?

Angelika Sam Ortiz, the songwriter behind BINI's hit song "Pantropiko," shared her journey on creating what could be the summer anthem of Filipinos this year.

The rising composer was a film student when she composed "Pantropiko." She aspired to express herself through writing aside from films, hence she decided to venture into songwriting.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Angelika relayed that the song was inspired by the beaches in the Philippines.

"Actually po ang una kong naisip dito is kung anong unang magiging itsura ng MV since I’m a film student din po… Naisip ko na ang gandang visual kasi ng beach, lalo na sa Philippines," she said.

The songwriter also shared that she was thinking about her crush when she was writing the song.

"Para maka-relate din yung younger generations," she said.  

Angelika admitted that at some point she struggled to finish the song.

"Bigla na lang siyang pumasok sa isip ko like ‘Oh shucks, wala na akong maisip.' Sabi ko why not ilagay na siya sa song, and ayun!" she shared on her songwriting process.

She completed writing the song in ten days.

It was Julius James "Jumbo" De Belen, founder of FlipMusic Productions Inc., who invited Angelika to submit a song for BINI. 

Angelika then worked with Paula Patricia "Pow" Chavez, Mart Sam “Mat” Olavides, Migz Cortes, and Rap Sanchez to produce the song. 

"Pantropiko" was released as part of BINI's EP Talaarawan.

"Sobrang feeling blessed and thankful siyempre sa FlipMusic, sa Star Music, and BINI for having 'Pantropiko' as one of their songs sa EP nila," she said.

On her advice for aspiring songwriters, Angelica said: "Labas niyo lang nararamdaman niyo sa songs and eventually darating din sa time na makukuha yung songs niyo or mari-release din yan."

Early this year, BINI reached 1.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

The group attributed their success on the platform to "Pantropiko."

"We started this year with just a 100,000 monthly listeners and in just two months nasa 1.4 million na kami sobrang laking jump nito that's why it feels so unbelievable," BINI said.

They went on: "Pinaka-nakatulong po sa amin ang 'Pantropiko.' Grabe po 'yung pag bloom po niya sa TikTok."

BINI has now reached 5.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
