&lt;&gt;Chito Miranda, the frontman of Parokya ni Edgar, expressed awe and humility at the recently-concluded production of Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical, which concluded its run on June 23 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. The musical, featuring 47 songs from the band&#x27;s extensive discography, showcased the enduring appeal and relatability of their music.Chito emphasized his decision to stay out of the production process, trusting the creative team to bring their vision to life. “Ayokong makialam, ayokong makigulo. I trust them more than I trust myself when it comes to creativity,” he said. “Okay na ako sa band, but when it comes to theater, mas tiwala ako sa kakayahan nila to come up with something spectacular kaysa makigulo pa.” Chito and his bandmates opted to experience the musical as audience members. “While listening to our songs [in the play], I realized na ang ganda pala ng kanta namin. Nagulat ako,” he admitted. He expressed astonishment that their songs, which they have always viewed through a lens of simplicity, could be so impactful when reimagined in a theatrical context.The musical tells the story of four characters—a bullied high school student, a heartbroken matron, a determined scavenger, and a timid lady guard—who share the same birthday and are transported into the vibrant “Parokya-verse” through a mysterious mirror. They learn to overcome their inner demons with the help of the band&#x27;s iconic songs like “Harana,” “Mr. Suave,” “Magic Spaceship,” “Bagsakan,” “Gitara,” and “Ordertaker.”Reflecting on the band&#x27;s 31-year journey, Chito noted their ongoing disbelief at their continued popularity.“Ang tingin namin sa band up to now ay parang amateur garage band, we’re still a bunch of guys toying with guitars. We are not musicians. We’re just a bunch of entertainers,” he explained. This perspective, according to him, has made their music accessible and relatable to many, fostering a loyal fanbase and attracting new listeners.Touching on their unexpected mainstream success, Chito acknowledged the role of relatability in their music&#x27;s enduring appeal.“Wala talaga kaming tiwala when it comes to our music,” he said. “We initially didn’t plan on going mainstream. To be involved in something larger, this is bigger than us. Theater world na ‘to.”Buruguduystunstugudunstuy has not only highlighted the band&#x27;s musical legacy but also underscored the profound connection their songs have forged with the public.
