EJ Jallorina hopes for more roles for trans people in showbiz

<p>After starting out as part of the original cast of the hit kiddie variety show <em>Goin’ Bulilit</em>, EJ Jallorina has definitely come a long way as he now stars in Anima Studios latest dark comedy <em>Marupok A+</em> which was directed by Quark Henares.</p><p>The film, which was shot during the pandemic, has already made the rounds of various film festivals abroad. It stars EJ as a a transgender woman, who matches online with a man named Theo Balmacenda (played by Royce Cabrera), who turns out to be part of big catfish scheme planned by a sociopathic young director (played by Maris Racal).</p><p>During one film festival abroad which EJ attended, she shared her most memorable and meaningful moments with foreign fans after their screening.</p><p>“Paglabas namin ng sinehan sa Italy, may mga lumapit sa amin na mga queer, as in queer kids sila, mga bagets. So yung pinaka natatandaan ko, may mag-ama, queer yung anak niya tapos alam mong madami silang pinagdaanan habang pinanuod yung pelikula pero they were so grateful na it exists. I think isang malaking issue yun when it comes to queer actors and performers. Kung walang magkukuwento ng ganito, walang mag-po-produce, wala kaming magiging trabaho so yung saya sa akin is very just out of practicality.</p><p>&quot;Kasi ayokong dalhin yung buong community. Kasi alam ko na hindi lang ako dapat mag-isang nagbubuhat nun kahit I have the privilege na nabibigyan ng mga ganitong characters. Alam kong yung laban is dapat sa buong community pa din. And kung ma-o-offend ako if hindi trans actor gaganap sa trans role? I think so because it’s based on a real person, so I think pag hiniram natin yung mga kuwento, especially pinagdaanang tunay ng isang tao, I think kailangan bigyan natin ng respeto.</p><p>&quot;And sa kahit ano naman, pag hiniram natin, kailangan you take care of it and I think we did well. Kasi ang hirap nung topic and to me, masaya na lang ako na from ibang bansa and to us, alam niya yung kontexto ng pagiging PIlipino and yung pagiging online people here in the Philippines, very specific nung context na yun sa bansa natin eh. Like yung mga kasama ko sa showbiz na mga artista, even way, way back pa yung support nila. And even si kuya Quark (Henares). Kasi nagka-work kami way, way back. Eight years old pa lang ata ako nun. Masaya lang ako na support talaga yung mga tao and even outside the LGBT community, there are people who want to tell our stories.</p><p>&quot;So importante yun kasi yun dahil with that, nagkakaroon ng work, hindi lang yung iilan sa mga LGBT performers and actors. I think kahit ilan sa amin nabibigyan ng work kapag may nangangahas na magkuwento ng mga ganitong mga istorya na nag-X rating (laughs).
