Oyo Sotto and Kristine Hermosa share their secret to strong family bonds

Oyo Sotto and Kristine Hermosa have been married for thirteen years now, yet they admit to still feeling ‘kilig’ with each other.“Ako, halata naman ‘di ba?” said Kristine, with a smile.Oyo was quick to agree, although he explained that the reasons have naturally evolved through the years.“Oo naman, siyempre meron pa rin ‘yun,” said Oyo. “Pero siyempre, ibang level na. Hindi na ‘yung parang kilig-kilig na basta nakikita mo siya o nakakasama mo siya. Iba na, mas malalim na. Parang ‘yan, nakakakilig na buntis siya. Gano’n na.”He went on to share how another kind of ‘kilig’ can come from the knowledge that they would be going through new experiences together. The two tied the knot in 2011, and have five kids to date: Kristian Daniel, Ondrea Bliss, Kaleb Hanns, Marvic Valentin and Vittorio Isaac. Baby number six, a boy, is soon to join the family.“Iba na ‘yung feeling, na may isa pa kaming pagdadaanan as a couple, as parents,” he said. “Mas lumalalim na ‘yung kilig.”Oyo and Kristine are in love with each other as they are with their growing family. Both see each other as partners, and mutually care for the family. It is their family-oriented values that made them the newest celebrity endorsers of Silka beauty soap, which champions not only the importance of self-care for women but care for each member of the family as well.Last July 15, Oyo and Kristine were welcomed as the newest brand endorsers of the local beauty soap at a media launch held at Marquis Events Place in Taguig. Both Oyo and Kristine are grounded in their faith, and do what they can to set a good example for their kids.“Kung meron man kaming isang ipapamana sa mga bata, it’s our faith,” said Oyo.“Kahit anong mangyari sa buhay ninyo, you have to be rooted sa Word ni God,” Kristine added. “Just keep on going back kasi marami tayong haharapin sa buhay na confusion, temptation. Iba na ang mundo ngayon.”The second item was an I Spy book. It’s a game where the readers are challenged to hunt for items in the pictures. Playing with each other is one of the ways they spend time together with their kids.“Fun lang kasi laruin with the whole family,” said Kristine, sharing how they would play together as a family. “Unahan kami with the kids.”The third gift was a magnet, and was actually a Oyo’s gift to Kristine. A token from even before their marriage, it is a symbol of their strength and commitment to each other through the test of time.“Itong magnet na ‘to, binigay ni Oyo sa akin ‘yan noong namanhikan siya sa parents ko sa Canada,” she reminisced. “Na-keep ko siya for the longest time. Ilang beses na ‘tong pinaglaruan ng mga bata, kung saan-saan na napunta. Ang galing na andiyan pa rin siya, hindi pa rin nawawala.”She showed another magnet which she attaches to the refrigerator wherever they live. It reads: “Kalma lang, God is in control.” According to Kristine, it serves as a daily reminder for her and every member of the household to leave things to God.“Hindi natin hawak ang lahat ng pangyayari sa buhay natin,” she said.Fourth item on the list was a baby pillow, with a cover full of baby pictures of all their kids. It also includes letters from the kids and from Oyo. The pillow is one that all of their kids used, from their eldest to their youngest, and will soon be passed on to the newest addition to their brood.“‘Yung ganitong buhay, ‘yung daily routine namin minsan fast-paced. Most of the time, sa dami ng pictures na naco-collect over time, hindi mo na mabalikan ‘yung pinaka-una. So nandito ‘yung mag kauna-unahang pictures nila noong mga baby sila,” she explained. “It’s easy access for us, to remind us of what we really value and kung gaano naging faithful si God sa buhay namin.”Next up was a hard drive containing all the photos of their family, showing how memories with each member of their family are really what Kristine and Oyo treasure most.“We don’t really collect material stuff,” Kristine admitted. “Very simple lang kami sa family. Kung ano lang ‘yung kailangan namin, Hindi kami ‘yung nagho-hoard or nagco-collect ng material stuff.”Last in the box was a bar of soap, which they use for the whole family.
