MANILA - The government and its private sector partner on Thursday broke ground on the Light Rail Transit Line 1 extension, which will connect the capital to the Cavite suburbs.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade appealed to Light Rail Manila to finish construction ahead of the 2021 target.

"Please help us carry out our catching up plans," Tugade was quoted as saying in the DOTr Twitter account. The project, approved in 2011, faced a "gargantuan" delay, he said.

The 11 kilometer project will have 11 stations and will extend the LRT-1 from Redemptorist in Pasay to Niog in Bacoor, Cavite, the DOTr said.
