MANILA - The World 2018, an annual publication of The Economist, predicts year 2018 will be critical in many fronts.

The Economist shared key themes to watch out for next year, including North Korea’s nuclear challenge, Daniel Franklin, The World 2018 editor, told ANC's Market Edge with Cathy Yang.

“The tension in North Korea of course affects the world, if it does, heaven forbid, come to an actual flight with nuclear weapons that can reach a very long distance,” Franklin said.

Franklin also said developments in the Philippines make it fall under "Trumpism" or inward-looking, rather "Macronism," which promotes globalization, in reference to the economic philosophies of US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, respectively.

"I think the Philippines is more on the Trumpism category in many ways, in terms style of government, in terms of attitude, sort of populist politics," Franklin said.

"But then the Philippines doesn’t have the size of the US, so it has to remain pretty open to trade,” he said.
