Though this is an 11.8 percent increase in a span of 5 years, Monzon said this is still a low number compared to other countries.“Hopefully at least in the next 5 years, if they can double that 1.9 [million], it’s good enough for us because it took us 94 years to get there,” said Monzon.PSE data shows 68 percent of stock market users in the country are based in Metro Manila and very few are in Visayas (7 percent), and Mindanao (5 percent). Monzon is optimistic that retail market participation will grow further with access to stocks now more open with the recent launch of GStocks, a service on the GCash app.The retail participation rate in the PSE is 16 percent, lower than the 32 percent in the Indonesia Stock Exchange, 28.9 percent in the Stock Exchange of Thailand, and 19.5 percent in Bursa Malaysia. The retail participation at the PSE is valued at around P6.03 billion, down from P9 billion in 2021.“Retail participation in any stock market contributes to the liquidity of the market. Market liquidity is very important to make the market go up, to increase in value,” said Monzon.Antonio Jose Periquet Jr, Executive Chairman of AB Capital &amp; Investment Corp. said many Filipinos are not buying stocks for many reasons, among them is a lack of savings and more importantly the lack of easy access.“Without digital means, it’s simply too intimidating for an average Filipino to walk into a brokers’ office, open an account, fill up these forms,” Periquet said.AB Capital is the broker of GStocks. Jong Layug, Group Head of Wealth Management at GCash, said since the service was soft-launched last year, it already attracted half a million registrants. This number is not yet included in PSE’s 1.9 million count.“How do we help Filipinos grow their money? Earn money and stocks is one of the things we’re looking at,” Layug said.GCash is looking to expand GStocks to other cities outside Metro Manila as they are seeing growth in provincial areas, which had no access to stock before.
