MANILA -- The Visayas grid was again put on yellow alert on May 17, Friday.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) the Visayas grid is on yellow alert from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The NGCP said available capacity is at 2,883 megawatts, but peak demand will reach 2,568 megawatts.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

One plant has been on forced outage since 2022, while 2 have been down since 2023.

Another 2 went out between January and March 2024, while 13 power plants were out of order between April and May 2024.

Another 6 are running on derated capacities, the NGCP said.

The Department of Energy in April said that the current situation on electricity has reached crisis proportions.
