The fees are in compensation to affected IP communities by the construction of Kaliwa Dam after giving their Free and Prior Informed Consent according to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- Approximately 59 percent of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) consider themselves &#x27;poor&#x27;, according to a report released by the World Bank on Monday.</p><p>The Indigenous Peoples Survey 2023 found that this is higher than the 52 percent of non-indigenous people who considered themselves as poor.</p><p>The report noted that increasing IP&#x27;s access to water, sanitation, education, health, and economic opportunities &#x27;could significantly improve their living standards&#x27;.</p><p>The World Bank said there are 9.4 million people in the country identifying as Indigenous Peoples (IP). This means they make up 8.7 percent of the population.</p><p>More than half of the IPs consider themselves &#x27;food poor&#x27;, with 37 percent saying they experienced hunger in the past 3 months.</p><p>IPs also lag in educational metrics, since only smaller percentages advance beyond primary school, complete high school and attain post-secondary education.</p><p>The World Bank found out that many of the challenges faced by IPs are stemming from their geographic location.</p><p>World Bank Senior Social Development Specialist Carlos Perez-Brito said that land remains as a fundamental aspect of IP&#x27;s identity, culture, and subsistence, thus, it&#x27;s important to protect IP&#x27;s land rights to address poverty and conflict in the country.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/4/25/filipinos-push-for-indigenous-peoples-rights-in-un-event-2303" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Filipinos in NY push for indigenous peoples&#x27; rights in UN event</a></div><p>The study said further research is necessary to delve deeper into the root causes of inequalities to inform policy in improving IPs&#x27; living conditions.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>FROM THE ARCHIVES: </strong></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/04Yw2byw2Cg?autoplay=1&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
