The Lopez-led Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has inaugurated the 28.9 MW Palayan Binary Geothermal Power Plant (PBGPP) in Manito, Albay.

This is part of the expansion of the existing 140 MW Bacon-Manito (BacMan) facility.

The P7 billion-project aims to harness the thermal energy of brine, a by-product of the BacMan facility without the need for additional steam or additional drilling.

EDC President and Chief Operating Officer Jerome Cainglet said they will be building more geothermal power plants as it is one of the most reliable sources of clean energy and that it is an indigenous source of power, unlike coal which is imported.

At least two binary plants are expected to open this year- one in Leyte and another in Negros Occidental. Another geothermal plant and battery energy storage systems are being planned and some constructed in Albay. EDC is looking for more renewable energy sites.

EDC, First Gen Corporation’s all-renewable arm, has over 1,464.5 MW total installed capacity that accounts for 20 percent of the total installed renewable energy capacity in the country. Its geothermal portfolio is the biggest of all its renewable energy units with 1,169.85 MW or 80 percent of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity.
