Walkalators, working airconditioners, extension of terminal 2 and a link to the Metro Manila Subway.

These and more are just some of the improvements in store for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after the San Miguel-led New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC) formally took over operations last Saturday.

“Magkakaroon ng improvement ‘yung mga mobility equipment, elevator, walkalator, escalator, isa yan sa binibigyan nila ng pansin para maging comfortable ‘yung byahe ng mga pasahero,” Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

Bautista said NNIC has already ordered parts to fix the airport’s boarding bridges while working closely with telcos to improve broadband connectivity.

“Aayusin din nila ‘yung air conditioning system. Comfort rooms. Magdadagdag sila ng additional seats para sa mga pasahero. Makikita mo minsan may mga pasahero nakaupo sa sahig. Nakasalampal sa sahig,” he said.

Other improvements include upgrades to the airport parking system, baggage handling system, self check-ins, self bag-drops and biometrics. The NAIA will also be connected to the Metro Manila subway.

NNIC General Manager Angelito Alvarez said management expects annual passenger capacity to grow from 35 million to 62 million, while runway movements will also increase.

Bautista said NNIC must meet several key performance indicators or risk shortening the 25-year concession agreement to 15 years.

“During the first 8 years, dapat makita natin yung great improvement or else hanggang 15 years lang yung kanilang concession agreement. Isa sa main project niyan is ‘yung pagkakaroon ng Terminal 2 extension,” he said.

The consortium, consisting of San Miguel Holdings, RMM Asian Logistics, RLW Aviation Development, and Incheon International Airport Corporation, won the bid to rehabilitate NAIA in January.
