MANILA -- "Fast & Furious 8" has set a new record for the highest opening day earnings for the action movie franchise in the Philippines, according to Universal Pictures.

Starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, "Fast & Furious 8" opened at No. 1 last Saturday with a first-day gross of a P56 million from Philippine theaters, surpassing the P48 million opening day earnings of 2015's "Fast & Furious 7."

Saturday's receipts was also the biggest opening day of the year so far, as well the best first day gross for a Universal Pictures title in history.

Meanwhile, its two-day weekend gross of P110 million is also the biggest weekend ever for the film franchise, surpassing the P98-million bow of "Fast & Furious 7."

"Fast & Furious 8," debuted with $432.3 million internationally after bowing in 63 foreign markets. It also earned a solid $100.2 million in North America.

In "Fast & Furious 8," a mysterious woman seduces Dom (Diesel) into the world of crime and betrays people close to him.
