MANILA -- Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea, particularly in Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal, negatively affect the catches of fishermen in the area, the fisheries bureau said on Saturday. Nazario Briguera, spokesperson of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), recognized the situation, saying restrictions imposed by the Chinese Coast Guard and other Chinese vessels have an impact on fishermen there. &quot;Kapag may ginagawang action ang China diyan sa West Philippine Sea particularly sa DBM, nali-limit ang access ng ating mga mangingisda. So particularly sa BDM, I cannot give a specific figure, these actions definitely limits the access of fisherfolk, ito ay nangangahulugan ng pagkabawas din ng produksyon sa ating mga mangingisda,&quot; said Briguera. &quot;Kung dati malaya silang nakakapasok sa lagoon… with this aggressive action of China, nababawasan ang kanilang fisheries production,&quot; he said. The BFAR official said there were instances that fisheries production in the West Philippine Sea fluctuated. &quot;Sa konteksto ng tanong niyo particularly sa Bajo de Masinloc, I could confidently say na nababawasan ang production ng ating mga mangingisda because of the fact na limitado na ang kanilang access, hindi na nila magawa na malayang makapasok sa lagoon na dati naman ay nagagawa nila,&quot; he said. Filipino fisherfolk group Pamalakaya has already urged the Chinese government to stop its deployment of vessels aimed at harassing fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.The group said it supports Manila-Beijing&#x27;s dialogue to resolve the maritime dispute, and also called on both governments to ensure the safety and welfare of fishermen, especially those who have lost 80 percent of their income due to the tensions.
