Photo by Eric Gaillard, Reuters</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATED)</strong> - Filipina Jaclyn Jose won the best actress award at this year&#x27;s Cannes film festival for her role in Brillante Mendoza&#x27;s film, &quot;Ma&#x27; Rosa.&quot;</p><p>&quot;I’m at a loss for words! I am so surprised and moved. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the Jury members. I thank the director Brillante Mendoza, whose instructions I simply followed,&quot; Jose said in her speech early Monday morning Manila time.</p><p>&quot;He’s a brilliant director, a genius. I am so happy you liked the film. I’d like to salute the Philippine people,&quot; she added.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><div style="padding-top:66.375%"><div id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1_Container"> <ivs-player id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1" data-ivs-spid="3001339" data-ivs-key="e8c22c015ca9eafa76f1e3edfa03c603" data-ivs-vid="1473805" data-ivs-floating="1"></ivs-player> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/iframe-parent.js"></script> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/loader.js"></script> </div></div></figure><p>During the photo call of the movie “Ma’ Rosa,” Jose told ABS-CBN News she was not expecting anything, but it was a dream come true to be back in Cannes with her daughter, actress Andi Eigenmann, who also plays her daughter in the movie.</p><p>&quot;I dreamt of this, that someday I&#x27;m coming back with my daughter…Hindi pa siya artista noon,” she said.</p><p>Jose, who also appeared in Mendoza’s Cannes 2008 entry “Serbis,” is the first Filipino to receive the best actress award in the prestigious film festival.<br/><br/>Among those she’s beaten are high caliber actresses including Hollywood stars Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, French actresses Isabelle Hupert and Marion Cotillard.</p><p>She was described to be ‘a master of her skills” by one jury.</p><p>Meanwhile, Mendoza is the first Filipino to be honored in Cannes when he received the best director award in 2009 for his movie “Kinatay.”</p><p>Aside from Jose, &quot;Ma&#x27; Rosa&quot; also stars Julio Diaz, Andi Eigenmann, Felix Roco, and Jomari Angeles.</p><p>The film tells the story of a poor Manila neighborhood stall holder who sells drugs on the side with her husband to make ends meet.</p><p>The couple gets arrested, leaving their four children to try and buy their parents&#x27; freedom from corrupt policemen.</p><figure class="op-social"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SQ4nqo6FuS8" width="560"></iframe></figure><p>Aside from Jose, here are the other winners from the 2016 Cannes film festival, as chosen by a jury led by Australian director and &quot;Mad Max&quot; creator George Miller:</p><div><strong>Palme d&#x27;Or: &quot;I, Daniel Blake&quot;</strong></div><p>British Director Ken Loach won over the jury with his moving tale of a carpenter (Dave Johns) who suffers repeated humiliations as he seeks welfare benefits after having a heart attack.</p><div><strong>Grand Prix: &quot;It&#x27;s Only The End of The World&quot;</strong></div><p>Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan&#x27;s film was booed by some critics but the jury felt it deserved second place in Cannes for his fraught family drama. It is the latest in a string of Cannes honors for the 27-year-old director who won the third-placed Jury Prize in 2014 for &quot;Mommy&quot;.</p><div><strong>Jury Prize: &quot;American Honey&quot;</strong></div><p>Britain&#x27;s Andrea Arnold came in third with &quot;American Honey&quot;, starring Shia LaBeouf as the leader of a group of disaffected US teens selling magazines door-to-door.</p><p>A throbbing soundtrack accompanies the youths on their slow-paced road trip, with plenty of marijuana smoking, drinking and falling in love.</p><div><strong>Best actor: Shahab Hosseini in &quot;The Salesman&quot;</strong></div><p>The Iranian actor won for his role as a man struggling to come to terms with an attack on his wife in their home.</p><p>He sets out on a revenge mission while she tries to regain the upper hand and deal with the assault in her own manner.</p><div><strong>Best director: Cristian Mungiu and Olivier Assayas</strong></div><p>The best director award was shared between Romania&#x27;s Cristian Mungiu and France&#x27;s Olivier Assayas.</p><p>Mungiu shines a light on the post-communist social rot in his homeland in &quot;Graduation&quot;, about a father trying to ensure his daughter can escape Romania&#x27;s corruption with a scholarship to a British university.</p><p>Assayas won for &quot;Personal Shopper&quot; starring Kristen Stewart, a movie that is an audacious mix of ghost story, murder mystery and existential drama. Critics, however, booed it.</p><div><strong>Best screenplay: Asghar Farhadi</strong></div><p>The Iranian director, who won an Oscar in 2012 for &quot;A Separation&quot;, won best screenplay for &quot;The Salesman&quot;. – <strong>With reports from Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, and Agence France Presse</strong></p>
