MANILA -- For the first time, superstar Anne Curtis opened up about her past battle with anxiety and depression, which led to her "blocking everything" and avoiding the public eye for months.

Curtis, 33, revealed the dark episode during a recent press conference for her August 18 concert, "Annekulit," which also celebrates her 21 years in show business.

The "BuyBust" star was asked whether she has ever experienced depression, in light of a tweet she wrote in June about kindness in reaction to the suicides of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade.

"I've had my fair share of depression and anxiety," Curtis began. "A lot has to do with, in fact, press, and having the stress of press when I was going through something very, very tough."

She did not identify the specific event that led to the difficult period.

An actress since she was 12, Curtis has overcome several controversies that unfolded before the public. Numerous times, she came back strong from the likes of a wardrobe malfunction, a bitter breakup, and a drunken incident at a bar that made headlines, among others.

"A lot of anxiety built up na parang feeling ko ayaw ko nang humarap sa tao. It happened really, really bad," Curtis recalled.

Coping, for the actress, also meant not logging on to her social media accounts — she remains today the top online personality in the Philippines in terms of sheer number of followers — and turning to real-life connections.

She said: "I think when you have the perfect support team around you, and you don't let it eat you up inside, you'll be able to get through it... I blocked everything. I didn't open my social media for about a month or two. As in, I blocked everything out."

Asked to share her advice to those who may be going through anxiety or depression, Curtis answered: "I think it's really important to not keep it to yourself. You seek help.

"You seek help from your friends. Don't be ashamed. You seek help from your family, from people who love you. You can even seek professional help if you feel uncomfortable talking to family members and friends about it, but the most important thing is to seek help."

Curtis is the latest celebrity to reveal having gone through depression. Notably, known close friends of the actress, Isabelle Daza and Solenn Heussaff (also her sister-in-law), recently spoke up on the topic.
