<figure class="op-interactive"><div id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1_Container"> <ivs-player id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1" data-ivs-spid="3001339" data-ivs-key="e8c22c015ca9eafa76f1e3edfa03c603" data-ivs-vid="1422330" data-ivs-floating="1"></ivs-player> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/iframe-parent.js"></script> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/loader.js"></script> </div></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div><p>MANILA -- Multi-awarded film and TV director Maryo J. de los Reyes, who died last January, was honored by his alma mater, the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communications (UP-CMC) on the occasion of the second Glory Awards given by the UP-CMC Alumni Association (UP-CMCAA) last Saturday.</p><p>De los Reyes, who served as president of the UP-CMCAA during two glorious milestones in the college’s history, was given a fitting and heartwarming tribute that left not a few in the audience in tears. </p><p>He graduated from UP-CMC in 1974, with a degree in AB Broadcasting.</p><p>During UP-CMC’s 25th anniversary in 1990, De los Reyes had the distinction of serving as president for two years. He was persuaded to return in 2008 to lead the alumni board so he could oversee the alumni’s role for the UP Centennial Year celebration.</p><p>In the program, hosted by UP-CMC alumni Pia Guanio, Willy &quot;Hill Billy Willy&quot; Intong and Ramon Bautista, De los Reyes was said to have organized some of the best attended and most star-studded alumni homecomings in history. He transformed the Plaridel Hall parking lot into a big party zone and mounted best-remembered entertainment shows.</p><p>De los Reyes also made sure to honor the outstanding alumni of the college during UP-CMC’s silver anniversary and also organized the Centennial Alumni Awards on the occasion of UP’s 100th anniversary. It was De los Reyes’s vision that made UP-CMC what it is today.</p><p>He touched the lives of many with his iconic films, from “High School Circa ‘65” to “Bagets,” “Saan Darating ang Umaga,” “Sinungaling Mong Puso,” “Magnifico” to “A Love Story,” “I’ll Be There” and “The Unmarried Wife.” </p><p>Singer-actor Raymond Lauchengco, himself a graduate of the UP-CMC and a star in four memorable films that De los Reyes directed, graced the occasion and rendered his original songs.</p><p>Lauchengco sang the moving “Saan Darating ang Umaga,” the theme song of his 1983 film of the same title directed by De los Reyes and starring Maricel Soriano, Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa.</p><p>“The day that I recorded that song, I was a freshman po sa Mass Comm and we were shooting ‘Saan Darating and Umaga,’ with Direk Maryo,” Lauchengco recalled. “From school, I had to go to the recording studio bago po mag-report sa shooting.</p><p>“Maryo J was very, very excited that day because alam niya po na I would be recording the theme song, which was written by George Canseco. The minute that I got to the set, Direk Maryo was working, but he stopped everything and asked everybody to stop.<br/>“He said, ‘Raymond, give me the cassette.’ In those days, cassette pa po. How many of you remember cassettes? I’m sure we all do. He stopped all work so that he could listen to the theme song.</p><p>“Of course, I was terrified and I was really nervous. Direk Maryo had such high standards. The funny thing is, wala pong maka-produce ng cassette player. So he was very, very frustrated. He had all his cameras, all his lights, but cassette player, not to be found on the set.</p><p>“So, I meekly raised my hand and I said, ‘Sir, I have a cassette player in my car. So he ran to my car and he locked me out in my car. He was there with my driver he listened to the song. I was terrified for like four minutes that he was auditioning the song. Then he came out and he goes, ‘Everybody go back to work.’ That was Direk Maryo in a nutshell.”</p><p>Lauchengco also had the “great fortune” of singing the popular ballad, “Farewell,” the graduation theme from De los Reyes’ youth-oriented flick, “Bagets,” another film Lauchengco starred in, this time with Aga Muhlach, Herbert Bautista, William Martinez and JC Bonnin.</p><p>A special video prepared by the organizers played on the screen, showing images of De los Reyes’ photos with the many artists he worked with through the years.</p><p>One of the director’s proteges, Isabel de Leon, sang an acoustic version of “I Won’t Last a Day Without You,” one of De los Reyes’ favorite tunes. De Leon was the young girl carried by Jiro Manio in De los Reyes’ award-winning film, “Magnifico.”</p>
