Filipino music has gotten more popular abroad over the years, Spotify said on Wednesday, as it celebrated its 10th anniversary in the Philippines.According to the music streaming platform, global streams of Pinoy songs grew by an average of 80 percent from 2014 to 2023.In a media roundtable in Taguig, Spotify’s Southeast Asia managing director Gustav Back said the top export markets for Filipino music are the US, Canada, and Indonesia.The P-pop genre alone grew by 138 percent year-on-year, he said.For its part, Spotify said it tries its best to promote local artists to international audiences through its Radar playlist, which features a different lineup of emerging Filipino acts representing various genres every year.“We’ve had some notable successes in the Philippines — Radar artists like Zack Tabudlo, SB19… BINI also,” said Back.Back noted that the girl group BINI’s listenership has grown by 500 percent since it was included the Radar program in 2022.He said the company also considers Manila as a “global trigger city.” “When something takes off in Manila, that’s a great predictor of how it’s going to do in other parts of the world… We have a lot of examples where a global artist has seen their success here first and that has then translated to other markets globally,” explained Back, citing some K-pop, J-pop, and T-pop acts.<div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/2024/10/10/maki-moira-dela-torre-among-opm-artists-recognized-at-spotify-s-10th-year-celebration-1412">Maki, Moira dela Torre among OPM artists recognized at Spotify&#x27;s 10th year celebration</a></div>Locally, Back said Filipinos are also consuming more homegrown content, with Pinoy music streams having quadrupled over the last five years.“The Philippines was one of the markets in Southeast Asia that had a very international market… It was only in 2017 where we had a local artist topping the Top 50 chart, that was Moira (Dela Torre). I guess that was a bit of a turning point because today, 75 percent of the Top 50 charts is local Filipino music,” Back noted.Local podcasts are also getting some love from Pinoy fans.According to Spotify, the consumption of podcasts in the country grew 11 times over the last five years and 80 percent of that podcast consumption comes from local shows. <div>IMPACT OF VAT ON FOREIGN DIGITAL SERVICES </div>Meanwhile, Spotify has yet to comment on how its business and pricing in the Philippines will be affected by a new law imposing a 12-percent value added tax (VAT) on foreign digital service providers (DSP).<div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/2024/10/9/-tabing-ilog-musical-returns-with-new-members-layers-2126">&#x27;Tabing Ilog&#x27; musical returns with &#x27;new members, layers&#x27;</a></div>The Bureau of Internal Revenue is still currently drafting the implementing rules and regulations for this.But it has cited Spotify as among the companies that would be covered by the measure, which aims to level the playing field for local DSPs that are already being taxed.In an earlier interview with ABS-CBN News, tax expert Mon Abrea said the 12-percent VAT will most likely be passed on to consumers through higher subscription fees.
