MANILA — With the lack of documentaries on pop culture in the Philippines, ABS-CBN News journalist Jeff Canoy shared why they matter as he tackles the story of the rise of OPM girl group BINI.

In a talk after the release of the second chapter of their documentary series, Canoy recalled a comment questioning their choice of BINI as their subject.

"To which I say, una, gumagawa rin naman kami ng mga docu tungkol sa iba pang mga isyu, hindi lang naman ito ang ginagawa namin. Pero ayoko kasi na parang may pag-downplay sa pagtingin sa kwento nitong 'pop group' na ito," the ABS-CBN News journalist said.

"Kasi nakalakip sa kanila 'yung mga mahalagang aral, kwento kabilang diyan 'yung family, mental health," he added.

He hopes that more would cover topics on pop culture as it solidifies the identity of our country as a nation.

"I think kulang tayo sa mga docu that examines pop culture, in general, sa Pilipinas, which helps form our identity as a nation," Canoy said.

"Sana 'yung mga ganoong tingin parang hindi ba dapat mas marami tayong, hindi pinagbabangga kumbaga 'yung mga documentary kasi the more documentaries we have, the better for the industry and for our nation because parang nako-cover lahat ng ground kasi 'yun naman 'yung kwento natin," he added.

"It shouldn't be one or the other parang if you have more seats on the table, if you have more documentaries of different flavors, differents topics, 'yun 'yung dapat goal natin.
