MANILA -- "It's Showtime" host Vice Ganda was again recognized as among the top taxpayers in Quezon City, together with other big celebrities like Kim Chiu, Dingdong Dantes and more.

Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. handed out the awards during the tax campaign kick-off of BIR Quezon City. He said it is important to partner with celebrities as these stars can also help influence the public into filing and paying the right taxes.

“Kapag nagpapakita ang mga idolo natin na nagbabayad ng tamang buwis, tingin ko malaking bagay ito na makapaghikayat sa ating taxpayers na mag report at magbayad ng tamang buwis,” he said.

Aside from Vice Ganda, other top taxpayers in Quezon City are Kim Chiu, Darren Espanto, Dingdong Dantes, Jennylyn Mercado, Dennis Trillo, Allen Dizon, Julia Barretto, Richard Reynoso, Jason Dy, Daniel Padilla, and Catriona Gray. Other awardees who weren’t able to attend the ceremony but sent video messages were Kathryn Bernardo, Piolo Pascual, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon.

“May this award inspire other people na paying taxes is not just our duty, but this is also a contribution for a better country,” said Kim Chiu during her acceptance speech.

Vice Ganda also urged the public to pay the proper taxes, but also said that Filipinos must always monitor where the taxes are going.

“Obligado tayo magbayad ng buwis at dapat natin gawin yun,” Vice said.

She added: “Pakatapos natin magbayad ng buwis, tatanungin natin nasaan na po ang quality of life? Nasaan na po ang projects? Nasaan po ang tulay? Bakit po bumagsak ang tulay sa Isabela?”

Lumagui welcomed the statement of the TV host, saying he is happy that Vice is urging people to still pay taxes and that it is everyone’s right to know where the taxes go.

“Sa sinabi ni Vice Ganda, sinabi niya na magbayad tayo kahit ano pa mangyari, pero tungkulin natin na bantayan din… Karapatan din naman natin na tingnan na nagagamit ang pondo sa tamang paraan,” said the BIR chief.

Lumagui is confident of still hitting the tax collection target of P3.23 trillion this year, which is higher than the already record-high tax collection of P2.85 trillion last year.

MANILA -- Vice Ganda opened up on Wednesday about her thoughts on the tour that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gave to former "Sexy Babe" contestant, Heart Aquino, from the noontime show "It’s Showtime."

This, following Aquino's viral response where she admitted her unfamiliarity with the poll body.

Vice Ganda appreciated Comelec's response to the incident, but she also pointed out that addressing voter awareness should go beyond individual cases.

“Mixed emotions ako doon. Unang-una, gusto ko kung paano tinanggap ng Comelec 'yung issue. Tinanggap nila nang bukas ang kanilang pag-iisip at bukas ang kalooban. Sinabi nga nila na parang failure nila 'yun sa Comelec—baka nga nagkaroon sila ng pagkukulang sa pagpapalaganap ng impormasyon tungkol sa kanila. Kaya inaako din nila. Sabi ko, ‘Ay, ang galing, inaako din nila,’” Vice said.

The comedian also stressed that while Comelec’s response was commendable, a systemic approach is needed to address voter education and that Comelec's campaign on educating the public should be widespread.

Vice Ganda, alongside the "It’s Showtime" team, launched the mini segment "Quiz V," where she quizzes audience members on educational topics, aiming to make learning more engaging.

“We just felt the need to have a segment like 'Quiz V' na nire-request din ng mga tao online, ng mga madlang people,” she shared.

“Dun sa mga nakaraang segments, sa mga nakakausap nating contestants, parang mayroong crisis nga, di ba? So how do we help? Paano tayo makakatulong sa pamahalaan, sa lipunan, sa Department of Education para may katuwang sila sa trabaho nila? So, 'yun 'yung simpleng paraan namin,” she said.

With this, Vice expressed her delight at how the segment has been positively received.

“Nakakatuwa na it’s working. The people are liking it, the people are participating, sumasagot sila, and they feel proud of themselves pag nakakasagot sila.”

Beyond just providing entertainment, Vice emphasized that the noontime show has a deeper responsibility.

“Actually, it has always been one of the responsibilities of our show. Kasama 'yun sa paliwanag sa amin ng ABS-CBN management dati. Ano ba itong programa niyo? Ano ang idudulot natin? Ano ang goal natin? Anong mission natin?” she shared.

“Siyempre, bukod sa makapagpatawa—kasama yun sa theme song at sa salita niya sa simula—yung bukod sa makapag-entertain, maging tulay ng pag-asa... kasama sa pagiging tulay ng pag-asa natin yun, ang pagbibigay ng impormasyon.”

"At paano ka makakatulong sa pagpapaangat ng kaalaman ng mga tao tungkol sa mga pangyayari sa paligid nila, 'di ba? Yung socio-political na approach... Mayroon din talaga tayong obligasyon na mag-inform. Lalo na sa panahon ngayon ng misinformation at disinformation, panahon ng fake news, 'di ba? Paano tayo makakatulong para makabigay ng solusyon sa mga ganyang suliranin?”

While Vice thinks Quiz V is really good for the audience, she also said that it was not a major segment and that it's just one of their ways to hype up the audience at the start of the show.

"Tignan natin kung made-develop siya bilang isang buong segment," she said.

MANILA -- The contestant on the "It's Showtime" segment "Sexy Babe" who went viral after admitting that she is not knowledgeable about the Commission on Elections (Comelec) went to the central office of the commission in Intramuros, Manila on Tuesday.

Heart Aquino was invited by the commission for a guided tour at the Palacio del Gobernador where Comelec is holding office.

She was welcomed by Comelec officials and had a meeting with chairman George Erwin Garcia.

After the tour, Aquino entertained questions from the media and said, she now understands the importance of this government agency.

”Mas naunawaan ko po yung meaning din po talaga ng Comelec and kung ano po yung ginagawa nila,” Aquino told the media.

According to Aquino, she has already experienced casting her vote in the previous Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls. She explained that what happened during the competition was an isolated case, as she experienced a "mental block" when Vice Ganda asked her the question.

“Hindi lang po ako masyadong knowledgeable po, pero meron naman po akong kaalaman and na-mental block lang din po ako since first appearance ko sa TV and medyo nakakakaba po talaga,” Aquino said.

Comelec’s Atty. Frances Arabe, Director III of Comelec's Standards and Innovation Office was asked by the media if Aquino could be a possible ambassador of the agency to educate the younger generation of voters.

“Si Heart kasi nakikita namin na puwede siyang maging influence sa youth... We would like to show that Comelec is willing to reach out to the youth and to inform all of them... Si Heart can be that person,” Arabe said.

Though it is not yet final, Aquino expressed willingness to be part of the agency’s ambassadors to reach the younger generation of voters and encourage them to vote this coming May polls.

“Actually kung titingnan ko po siya, its an opportunity po siya and yes po, willing naman po ako and to inspire the youth,” Aquino said.

According to Comelec spokesperson Atty. John Rex Laudiangco, of the total 68,431,965 registered voters, about 21, 649, 670 or 31.64 percent are from the youth sector or those aged 18 to 30.

Aquino admitted that she was affected by bashers on social media and asked them to stop maligning and making her a laughingstock.

"Stop na po kasi hindi din po nila alam kung ano yung effect sa mga tao na bina-bash, hindi lang po sakin maski sa ibang tao po,” Aquino appealed.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is one of the three constitutional commissions of the country. They are responsible for enforcing all laws and regulations related to the conduct of elections in the Philippines–– from election, plebiscite, initiative, referendum, and recall.

Vice Ganda shared that he realized that there is a “systemic and educational problem” in the country after the segment where contestant Heart Aquino revealed she didn’t know what the COMELEC was.

In one of the previous episodes, Heart was asked to give a message to COMELEC. When she couldn’t respond, the hosts asked her if she knew the basics of the government office to which she replied she didn’t as she hasn’t encountered them yet.

“May systemic and educational problem sa Pilipinas. Yun ang narealize ko–– may educational crisis sa Pilipinas na dapat natin iaddress,” Vice said.

“Bakit ganun? Saan kaya nag sisimula yung educational crisis sa Pilipinas? Sino ang naapektuhan nito? Ano kaya dapat gawin? Paano dapat harapin? Ito ba ay dapat pag tawanan lang natin?” Vice questioned.

Karylle then expressed how frustrated and hurt she felt after watching the answer of one of the contestants. She added how voters–– most especially the youth—should be more informed as the midterm elections are approaching fast.

“Malaman mo yung totoong temperatura ng kabataan ngayon na hindi pala alam ng karamihan yung COMELEC, ang sakit parang hindi ko alam kung anong gulat yung naramdaman ko kahit inexplain na natin Commission on Elections–– hindi pa rin,” she shared.

“Napakalaking percent ng youth boboto sa eleksyon kaya sa malaking bahagi ng kabataan na boboto, ilan kaya doon yung bobotong hindi informed?” Vice added.

Meanwhile, all the hosts agreed in unison and maintained that everyone should get involved–– from individuals up to the government.

“Kaya siya tinawag na systemic–– hindi lang isa ang mayroon ditong problema. Marami ang may kinalaman,” Vice continued.

This isn’t the first time that the hosts of the noontime variety program expressed their thoughts on national issues such as voter’s education.
