Capping off our list of ten reasons it’s worth the effort to go out to the cinema and support local films are these five titles that are worthy of a spot on your MMFF must watch list this year.

6. FOR THOSE WHO NEED SOME “KILIG” IN THEIR LIVES

Whether you’re familiar or not with the country’s next generation love team FranSeth composed of Seth Fedelin and Francine Diaz, their first MMFF film My Future You will surely tug at your hearts as a love story that transcends time and space.

Their characters Lex and Karen get paired up in a dating app and end up sparking an instant connection, only to discover that they come from different timelines. So what do they do when they find out he’s from 2009 and she’s from 2024? Watch this heartwarming love story that will take you back to a time when you thought love was so simple.

7. FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T CHOOSE BETWEEN DRAMA OR HORROR

Never mind the fact that almost everyone is excited to see Judy Ann Santos back on the big screen again. Never mind that Espantaho also marks Chito Roño’s directorial return to the MMFF after a whole decade since Feng Shui 2. Acting wise, watching powerhouse actresses like Juday, Lorna Tolentino, and Chanda Romero is more than enough reason to experience this film. Add to that an intriguing storyline that mixes elements of family drama and the supernatural and you’ve got a story that might keep you up at night long after you’ve watched it.

The stoy begins with a mother and daughter named Rosa and Monet (played by Lorna and Judy Ann) who mourn the death of their patriarch in their ancestral home. With the arrival of other family members in the picture, more issues arise as well as the growing number strange forces everyone must now face in the home.

8. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO BE IMPRESSED BY THEATER ARTISTS

With a lineup of some of the most talented theater artists in the country, Isang Himala can almost certainly guarantee a satisfying show of talent and passion translated from stage to the screen. The movie is based on the theatrical play of the same name which premiered in 2018.

After directing Gomburza last year, director Pepe Diokno shows us how he can do a musical format impressively well. Set in the small town of Cupang, Elsa (Aicelle Santos) finds herself gaining more and more believers everyday after claiming to see an apparition and having the ability to heal the sick.

9. FOR THOSE WHO NEED A GOOD CRY

If you were to base your judgment from all the trailers alone, Green Bones might seem to have the simplest and most bare concept out of all of the MMFF entries this year.  Headlined by actors Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid, this is the story of a notorious murderer scheduled for release from prison after allegedly killing his sister and the newly appointed corrections officer who is determined to prove his guilt beyond all means.

Set in the fictional Penal Farm, the largest prison island outside of Metro Manila, their interactions with each other call to question the true meaning of humanity and the true price of justice. With a story that has an unpredictable conclusion, expect Dennis Trillo’s acting to affect you in ways you never thought possible.

10. FOR THOSE WHO IMAGINE LIVING IN A DIFFERENT KIND OF PHILIPPINES

Fans of MMFF blockbuster king Vic Sotto might not be used to seeing him in a non-comedy role, but will nonetheless still be impressed with his bearing as the ruler of the fictional Kingdom of Kalayaan Lakan Makisig.

The Kingdom reimagines the Philippines as if the islands were never colonized. As the king struggles with the decision of who among his three children should become his rightful heir, the entrance of an outcast farmer (played by Piolo Pascual) into the king’s life makes for one very interesting storyline of action, drama, and suspense, with political and social issues added on. So if you’ve ever daydreamed about what an alternate version of the Philippines would look like, hopefully The Kingdom provides an answer that is also an entertaining option to consider.
